The Story Of Land Its Use And Misuse Through The Centuries theme is that humans depend upon land for their well-being and that humans can use the land to their advantage or to their detriment. Limited number available.
Students compete with in the following age groups. Grades K-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12. Subject matter shall be related to the use and/or conservation of natural resources (soil, water, air, plant, animal), with special emphasis on the conservation of soil and water. Poster shall be on 12" X 18" poster paper and arranged for horizonal display only.
Grades 5-8. The essay shall not exceed 500 words and be double-spaced typewritten on 8 1/2" X 11" paper.
Grades 5-8. Subject matter is the same as poster contest. The limerick shall be placed on 12" X 18" poster paper.
Students are trained and tested in five natural resource areas: soil, forestry, wildlife, water resources and current environmental issues. A team of five competes at the area-wide contest. The winning team will be eligible to compete on the state level.
Shawnee County Conservation District's 18th annual speech contest. Contest is open to all students, grades 9-12. Entrants must be a Kansas resident. The speech must be between 5 and 8 minutes in length. Complete rules.

Grand prize: $500.00 scholarship as state winnerShawnee County winner, to be determined September 30, 1996 at local contest, will compete in the Northeast Kansas Area contest (Time to be announced). Area winner will compete at the Kansas Association of Conservation District's annual meeting in Wichita, November 25, 1996. Winner at the convention would be eligible for the grand prize.

The month of April brings an increased focus on the environment through various Earth Day events. The conservation district yearly sponsors an Environmental Fair. The fair features several federal, state and local governmental agencies as well as industry and private organizations. Held in an exposition type atmosphere each group has hands on activities or displays that educate students in many aspects of environmental issues and sound management practices.
The district also will appear at your event upon request.

Churches may order items such as bulletins, litanies, posters, bookmarks, etc. for use in recognizing and promoting the wise stewardship of the soil and water.
A week at the Rock Springs 4-H Center south of Junction City, Kansas for grades 10-12. The purpose of the camp is to give a selected group of outstanding young people training in the art and science of range management.

During two weeks (Monday - Friday, 8:30-4:30), teachers are exposed to a variety of agricultural topics. Presentations, field trips and projects show how the food chain touches each person's life. The course provides hands-on experiences for integrating agriculture into all subject areas. The information is not designed to be taught as a separate agricultural class.
Teacher selected to attend will receive a $275 scholarship and three graduate credit hours.

Once many of the basic ecological concepts are understood, project WET allows teachers or educators to present an interdisciplinary approach to water issues to grades 6-12.
