Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is an important advancement that gives conservation districts a better ability to access, quantify and disseminate natural resource data. In March 1999 the Shawnee County Conservation District submitted a grant application to Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) to obtain a copy of ArcView. By May 1999 our grant was approved and received the ArcView software. Since that time the office, working with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, has been working to learn the skills necessary to operate ArcView and produce products. (The Shawnee County Conservation District wants to sincerely thank the ESRI Conservation Program for the support given to conservation districts through the grant program). For additional insight into GIS go to The Society For Conservation. We have found there are two broad areas of products needed in a county. Site / Customer specific and Area / Watershed based. Below are some example products we have produced. Each product is a composite of themes (data layers). Click image to load a page size image for better viewing and printing if you like. Use the "Back" icon of your browser to return to this page. Click here to print a description of each product before continuing if you like. Please note that the quality of the printing that you will get directly out of ArcView will be of superior quality over that which is obtainable from these examples over the web. |
