Pasture / Hayland Management encompasses managing grasses and/or legumes to maximize yields while protecting the natural resources. Generally we are considering a pasture with only one or two species of grass or legumes to manage. Many times these are introduced species (plants not naturally found in the area) that require the addition of soil amendments such as lime, fertilizers and pesticides to achieve desired yields. Each soil, in a given landscape, climate and nutrient level, has a finite ability to produce forage. Consult a soil survey at your nearest Conservation District or Natural Resources Conservation Service office for more details. Timing of the harvest through haying, the season, number and type of livestock used for grazing, all has to be carefully studied to prevent over use of an area. Proper planting procedures is also part of the management of pastures. Starting off wrong will lead to years of disappointment. |
