[Field Bordered By Grass]

Field Borders are strips of legumes and or grasses that are established around a cropland field.

Some of the benefits are:

  • Provides a medium by which when water passes through them a portion of the soil, nutrients and pesticides that may be in the water is filtered out.

  • Provides additional wildlife habitat particularly if planted to native grass. Mowing for hay should be delayed until after nesting period. The regrowth provides good winter cover.

  • Provides area for equipment to turn on during planting and harvest. This way end rows will not be planted up and down the hill which can lead to increased soil erosion.
