Key Conservation Practices
The Shawnee County Conservation District is located in northeast Kansas. About 60 miles west of Kansas City and 60 miles south of the Nebraska border. The county is a mix of farmland and urbanizing areas. Topeka of a population of 125,000, the capital of Kansas, is located in center of Shawnee county. There is also seven smaller towns and other communities within the county.
All of this is to say, there are large and small farms but also urbanization throughout the whole county. So when the slide show below is titled "Key Conservation Practices," this relates to the location in Kansas we are in and may be similar or completely different of the area of country or concern you may have. Many with some adaptation are applicable to both the rural and urban areas. For example, where a terrace might be built on a farm to slow water runoff to reduce soil erosion, on a construction site a silt fence may be used. Where nutrient and pest management should be used in balance on the farm, home owner should follow the same method but modified on their scale.
Go through the slide show. This one is a broad view of the key, most requested, most used to sustain our nature resources.
