Cover - Forage Crops

This page explores cover/forage crops in several ways.

Cover crops are used in many ways.  Quick cover, soil building, forage and more.  Weighing the cost, time to implement, available personnel, available equipment, benefit to soil health and crop yield, balanced pest and nutrient management.  Well there is a lot to consider.  Many make a system using cover crops work and economical.  Generally a system that incorporate livestock obtain the best benefit.  Both cultural and economic.

There is plenty of information out there relating to cover crops.  Study it.  Start small.  Keep good records of what you do.  Make each step as efficient as possible for your operation. 

PLEASE NOTE:  Cover crops are great.  But if you are participating in some type of cost share or sponsorship program dealing with cover crops, you MUST follow the rules involving plant selection, seeding rates and dates, harvest and usage rules.  Please read carefully what you are obligated to do.
