The State Conservation Commission (SCC), established in 1937, was put under the Kansas Department of Agriculture in 2012. The Division of Water Resources (DWR) headed by the Chief Engineer-Director, is one of six Divisions within the Kansas Department of Agriculture. It has five Field Offices, Topeka, Stafford, Stockton, Garden City and Chanute. Kansas Department of Agriculture's Plant Protection and Weed Control regulates pesticide labeling and use within Kansas. The division also administers chemigation safety programs and works jointly with US-EPA on programs to protect endangered species, groundwater and surface waters from pesticides used. Cases of improper use, storage and disposal of pesticides/containers are investigated. Also the division oversees Kansas noxious weed control, biological control and pest survey programs. The major goal of the NECO is to identify, correct and prevent sources of environmental contamination. The NECO conduct field inspections of KDHE permitted facilities and site appraisals at facilities that apply for a KDHE permit. Technical assistance is provided to help facilities understand environmental regulations and statutes and the conditions of their permits. When a facility is found violating applicable laws or regulations, NECO strives to work cooperatively with the facility operators to correct violations.

The major goal of the NECO is to identify, correct and prevent sources of environmental contamination. The NECO conduct field inspections of KDHE permitted facilities and site appraisals at facilities that apply for a KDHE permit. Technical assistance is provided to help facilities understand environmental regulations and statutes and the conditions of their permits. When a facility is found violating applicable laws or regulations, NECO strives to work cooperatively with the facility operators to correct violations.

Established in 1954, the Shawnee County Conservation District is a subdivision of State government. The agency was formed in 1948 as a City-County District. General sanitation, weed control and inspection of food service establishments have been its responsibilities since that time. Under county-wide zoning, septic system and water supply inspections were also done from that time. Over the years, other programs were added: Air Pollution and Housing Code Enforcement in 1964, and Local Environment Protection Plan (LEPP) in 1990.

Shawnee County Parks and Recreation maintains five parks throughout Shawnee County. Lake Shawnee features trout, catfish and bass fishing; waterfowl in abundance in Fall and Spring; all types of water sports; camping; Arboretum and Botanical Gardens; Lake Shawnee boating and fishing licenses required; Shawnee North Community Park, 300 NE 43rd, has a 2.1 mile nature trail along Indian Creek.
